A typical wood-framed house consumes more than one acre of forest, creating three to seven tons of waste
during construction. Techniques such as "optimum value engineering" reduce the amount of wood consumed
on a project. Construction and demolition recycling ensures that any wood waste is recycled and not landfilled. Alternative building systems such as straw bale
and adobe can virtually eliminate wood in buildings.
