Organizations and governments use certifications or "ecolabels" to educate consumers about the environmental characteristics of products. Both wood and nonwood products are certified.

When resource conservation and alternative options have been exhausted and new wood products must be purchased, consumers should specify Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood.
